“You look like you’re trying to solve the world’s problems.” Kade had that head tilt going on that sent warmth through my chest and made me want to scratch behind his ears. A little weird in human form, though it was seriously adorable.

“Not the world’s. Just mine.” I stayed on the other end of the sofa but slid further back to make talking easier. I felt strangely jittery, like I drank too much coffee. “What does being attracted to me mean?”

“Well, when a wolf likes a guy very much—”

“Oh my, God, stop!” I shoved his shoulder. “Not like that. I’m trying to be serious here. Wolves don’t date humans, right? So, you’re saying you’d be open to having sex with me without strings. Am I understanding that correctly?”

Kade shifted, his large hands rubbing his oh-so-muscular thighs, and I couldn’t help but stare. I bet those thighs would feel amazing riding between mine . . . what the hell was wrong with me? We needed to talk. I could fantasize later.

“I . . . that’s an excellent question.” His fingers flexed. “I don’t exactly know. My wolf is confused. That part of me is all instinct. It has strong opinions about you.”

“Care to share with the class?”

He shrugged. “My wolf demands I throw you down on any vertical surface, fuck and knot you until you don’t know your own name, and ruin you for anyone else.”

I choked on my spit, coughed.

He slid a little closer and patted my back.

“Okay, wow, that’s direct,” I got out between coughs.

“Wolf, remember?”

“I do now, yeah.” Damn, he smelled so good. Talk about an aphrodisiac. I kept my eyes from straying to his bare chest. It took effort, and I couldn’t stop myself from inching closer to him. Everything in me screamed to crawl into his lap. His admission seemed to have broken my determination to keep things strictly friendly.

“But I’m not just instinct.” Kade’s hand remained on my back, a brand even through my hoodie. A sudden rush of heat like a hot flash made me want to strip. “My rational side says this is a disaster waiting to happen. I don’t know if you understand about bonding, but—”

And there it was. The reason I needed to keep these boundaries in place.

“Ali explained it to me. Humans don’t have magic, so no bonding, and wolves don’t stay long without a bond.”

He rubbed at his forehead. “That’s what has me turned around. Wolves are very scent oriented and humans smell like prey, not like potential mates. But you smell divine. It makes my wolf crazy.”

And what could I say to that? Was that better or worse?

“You smell fantastic to me, too.” My ears burned.

“So, you feel the pull, too.”

“Definitely.” Did I ever.

“Then you can see my dilemma. I don’t want to hurt you.” His hand moved to my shoulder and squeezed. “I’d like you even if I wasn’t attracted to you, but I’ve already fucked up my friendship with Nora and the thought of doing the same to you isn’t appealing.
