âYou look like youâre trying to solve the worldâs problems.â Kade had that head tilt going on that sent warmth through my chest and made me want to scratch behind his ears. A little weird in human form, though it was seriously adorable.
âNot the worldâs. Just mine.â I stayed on the other end of the sofa but slid further back to make talking easier. I felt strangely jittery, like I drank too much coffee. âWhat does being attracted to me mean?â
âWell, when a wolf likes a guy very muchââ
âOh my, God, stop!â I shoved his shoulder. âNot like that. Iâm trying to be serious here. Wolves donât date humans, right? So, youâre saying youâd be open to having sex with me without strings. Am I understanding that correctly?â
Kade shifted, his large hands rubbing his oh-so-muscular thighs, and I couldnât help but stare. I bet those thighs would feel amazing riding between mine . . . what the hell was wrong with me? We needed to talk. I could fantasize later.
âI . . . thatâs an excellent question.â His fingers flexed. âI donât exactly know. My wolf is confused. That part of me is all instinct. It has strong opinions about you.â
âCare to share with the class?â
He shrugged. âMy wolf demands I throw you down on any vertical surface, fuck and knot you until you donât know your own name, and ruin you for anyone else.â
I choked on my spit, coughed.
He slid a little closer and patted my back.
âOkay, wow, thatâs direct,â I got out between coughs.
âWolf, remember?â
âI do now, yeah.â Damn, he smelled so good. Talk about an aphrodisiac. I kept my eyes from straying to his bare chest. It took effort, and I couldnât stop myself from inching closer to him. Everything in me screamed to crawl into his lap. His admission seemed to have broken my determination to keep things strictly friendly.
âBut Iâm not just instinct.â Kadeâs hand remained on my back, a brand even through my hoodie. A sudden rush of heat like a hot flash made me want to strip. âMy rational side says this is a disaster waiting to happen. I donât know if you understand about bonding, butââ
And there it was. The reason I needed to keep these boundaries in place.
âAli explained it to me. Humans donât have magic, so no bonding, and wolves donât stay long without a bond.â
He rubbed at his forehead. âThatâs what has me turned around. Wolves are very scent oriented and humans smell like prey, not like potential mates. But you smell divine. It makes my wolf crazy.â
And what could I say to that? Was that better or worse?
âYou smell fantastic to me, too.â My ears burned.
âSo, you feel the pull, too.â
âDefinitely.â Did I ever.
âThen you can see my dilemma. I donât want to hurt you.â His hand moved to my shoulder and squeezed. âIâd like you even if I wasnât attracted to you, but Iâve already fucked up my friendship with Nora and the thought of doing the same to you isnât appealing.
